Hello everyone

We do not get a lot of snow around Stockton Golf & Country Club, but we sure have seen evidence of some wintry mornings.

The frost delays have been lengthy over the last few weeks with the temperatures reaching as low as 24 deg.
With some moisture from fog mixed in to add to the severity and thickness of the frost and ice, we have witnessed a few white starts to our days.
The greens usually only get the leaf blades a little frosty with a ground frost, but the clear night sky's and freezing temperatures resulting in a few frozen greens recently, which is a hard thing to explain to some members when the sun has burnt of the visible frost.

With temperatures hovering around the 32F until 9 or 9:30am, and the added shaded sections on greens this time of year, makes for some lengthy delays indeed.

We sure do appreciate the patience of the members and quest during this time. Thank you all.

Just a quick picture to illustrate how noticeable foot marks can get with frost traffic, see below

G'day everyone

We had a few drops of rain recently at Stockton Golf & Country Club, 3.5" worth of accumulated drops around our course to be precise.

The course has help up pretty well, with only one tree falling into the maintenance yard and two limbs of a Cypress falling onto one of our irrigation clocks (thankfully we escaped with minor damaged to the lid of the clock.)
The inevitable time of year is here , with the fairways and rough becoming soft to very soft in some areas. The tight soils coupled with the fact that the majority of the golf course is below sea level, result in soils that simply have now where to drain after a few good rainfall events. Our friend the fog rolls in from time to time, keeping the sun from helping to dry out the surfaces.
We have been able to keep up with the falling leaves and also the cutting of grass to maintain a detailed appearance. Green stripes can be seen around the course right now, but looks can also be deceptive with the course having softer conditions. My advice is to be prepared for the softer conditions right now and have some fun with friends and other members.

The lake rim project is now complete, with only a couple of areas that we will add a few rocks to tidy up.
The rock looks nice and it will naturally blend into the golf course much better than the previous cement ledge.

Today we have a few signs we are heading into the winter months. The fog has rolled in off the delta, the leaves continue to fall and the 10 day forecast is quickly filling up with the likelihood of rain and showers.

Hello everyone

The edges of the lake rim have been chipped away to the point we can start adding the new rock. Utilising a bob cat and other machines, the rock is slowly rolled over the edge into place against the existing cement rim.

The outer rim has been completed except for a little more rock here and there.

Next the island tee will be the focus point with the rim being chipped away and then the rock added.
Hello everyone

No we do not have KISS or The Rolling Stones dropping by on their 150th anniversary tours, sorry.

We have begun work on the lake rim project in the middle of holes #7,#8 ans #12. Work will take around two weeks to complete, weather permitting. The cement rim of the lake was showing considerable damage due to the tidal effect of the filling and lowering of our irrigation supply, which comes directly out of the Delta. (This water supply causes us some challenges along the way in maintaining healthy turgrass, trees and gardens. More to come on that soon.)

A new gate was installed along the fence line to hole #7 for easy access to the heavy machinery that will be in operation for the project, and also any future needs.

With the fence installed and ready to go, the Ford Construction company rolled their machines and materials into town. The first step was to set up a boarded pathway for all of the machinery to be able to get to the lake rim without damaging our playing surfaces, irrigation and other fixtures.

Boards are laid down to support the weight of the heavy machinery and protect our turf, irrigation and fixtures.

As you can see in this picture the structural integrity of the existing lake rim has been compromised, with the soil steadily eroding away as a result of a tidal effect caused by the lowering and filling of the irrigation lake, which supplies all irrigation to the golf course.

The decision was made to break up the existing lip of the rim and let it drop below onto the soil ledge. This was to be follow by adding riprap stone to the ledge and up to the rim edge.
Right now the rain has started during the addition of the rock. But the construction crew will be able to push forward because of the boards already staged on the ground.
The night before a recent ladies golfing event, which had the ladies playing with members of staff here at Stockton Golf & CC, we had vandals spray paint three of our greens and also the restroom out on #16.

With some offensive language sprayed on the greens, and the ladies only a couple of hours away from a shot gun tee time, we scrambled a couple of groups from our crew to work on the problem greens.

Not knowing how much , if any, grass would be lost to the graffiti we decided to take cup cutters and half moon the letters. What is half mooning you ask. Half mooning is when we sink our cup cutter to the normal depth on the green as if we were about to change a hole location, then instead of removing the cup cutter plug we actually turn the cup cutter 180 degrees and scramble the painted letters.

Here is a couple of examples below.

The orange spray paint is still visible for now but the words are illegible. As the grass grows, we will cut of the painted sections.

Some areas of thick paint will not survive and we will need to plug out the areas and also sand and seed these areas.

Areas of thick paint were plugged out and transplanted to the edges of the greens. Unfortunately we do not currently have a nursery green to deal with this type of issue. I am working on the cost to build a bent grass nursery.

These areas though unsightly, will play the same as the rest of the green. We will need to revisit these areas over time to work on the health and appearance of the turf. In the end we are thankful that it was only paint.

It is that time again, the time for fall aeration.

We have just about 100% covered again with our bent grass on the greens. We aerated the greens in a little different order than has been done in the past here at Stockton G&CC. Several members have asked me how it is different from previous aeration's.

Here is a break down of the process.
The sand on the plugs is separated from the vegetative material and is blended with the top dressing sand.

G'day everyone

It is good to be back again at Stockton Golf & Country Club.

I am happy once again to be part of the Stockton G&CC family. It was good to see a lot old friends and I am looking forward to be making new friends. The crew in golf maintenance has only a couple of new faces and they are welcome additions.

I feel like the transition has been a smooth one for both myself and also our crew and also other departments. We have hit the ground running and are looking forward to the future.

I had a short period away from the club and kept in contact with Jim and took every opportunity to discuss and share ideas with him. Jim is a good friend, and I am happy for him and the new challenges set out before him at Bernardo Heights Country Club in San Diego. For people that wish to follow Jim at his new course click here bhccturf.blogspot.com. Good luck mate.

See you on the golf course.

And yes, that is an Australian flag flying above my profile.

This post was accidentally removed when we were transitioning over to my name and details, so I have re-posted the article.

Sorry bout that Jim.

Rob.

Tomorrow I will begin work at Bernardo Heights Country Club in San Diego, CA as the golf course superintendent. After nearly seven years at Stockton GCC, I am ready for a change and some new scenery. This was a very difficult decision because the staff, management, and especially the members have been so good to me and Stockton Golf was a second home. The time is right and my new opportunity was too good to pass up.

I want to thank all the people who followed this blog, sporadic as the posts may have been. There may be a new blog popping up and I will share the address when it becomes a reality. I hope the SGCC Turf Page continues to keep members updated and informed. I'll get my ugly mug off the the header and sign over the log in.

Finally, a few thank yous, starting with the best crew I've ever known. It was a rough goodbye to the staff who've worked so hard to make the club better day after day. I look forward to visiting and seeing continued progress in person.

And of course, thank you to the most supportive and appreciative membership I could imagine. It was so much fun working for you and greatly rewarding.

Thank you.Robert Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04421079715685197799noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2972247706794253096.post-25550823892240801042012-06-05T10:33:00.000-07:002012-09-14T16:55:49.323-07:00That looks better

The burm that divides the 3 par 15th hole and the maintenance facility just got a face lift. All the dying redwoods that were brought down during a tree company's last visit were mulched and stockpiled near the shop. It took us about 2.5 hours and 5 staff members to finish the whole stretch. The color provides a nice contrast and at 6-8 inches thick, we won't be spraying for weeds any time soon.
I asked Manuel if he had a golf ball and he said, "I know where one is." He led me to a nest near the lake and a Pro V that looked a little out of place. I used it for my tests and returned it for hatching.
After the crew detailed the course to tournament conditions, heavy winds arrived and made quite a mess. Friday's first round's 9:00 am shotgun had us starting at 4:00 am to mow, double roll, and blow, blow, blow. Thank you to our neighbors at Van Buskirk for the use of their roller, the greens were just awesome.
Three greens downwind of our massive and messy eucalyptus trees were covered in the flower parts that are tipped with tiny yellow anthers. Here is a excellent photo pulled from Microscopy UK and author Brian Johnston. The little white hairs covered three greens and slowed ball roll down making greens that were stimping 11.5 feet only roll out at 9.5. That is not very fair to the contestants.

We tried to blow them off, but they were glued to the surface. We tried to mow them off, and no luck at all. We then tried to wash them off with a high pressure nozzle and the greens were going to be soaked by the time we finished. As you can see below, the results were not that great.
Back to the drawing board and back to the shop to get our Greens Groomer brush. I spun the greens a couple of times, we mowed again and double rolled. Finally back up to speed and ready for play.
I'm well behind with blog posts, but it's better than being late with maintenance practices which are right on schedule. April 9th, we aerified the greens with 1/4 inch quad tines on our Toro 648 Procore. We had to make a few adjustments to our original plan and settled with half as many holes as we hoped for. The greens were lifting up way too much with all the tines in use so we had to pull a row. Good for the golfers, but not that great for the greens. We also verticut in two directions and wanted to go deep at 1/4" but the turf was too tight and bogged down the machine, so we settled with 1/8". Good thing we are flexible. Members were happy to see the small holes and the sand filled them up with no problem. The greens were all healed up after ten days and back to normal height in 2 weeks time.
When we topdress with sand, we put down a little extra on purpose. The worst thing you can do is apply too little sand and not fill the holes all the way to the top. Sweeping the greens clean and removing the sand cap from the top of each hole will lead to bumpy greens for the next month or two. Aerification has many benefits and one major plus is the smooth surface that topdressing creates. All the small depressions are filled in to improve ball roll and set the turf at a uniform height. We only get to do this a few times a year, so we are very careful to get it right.

This year, we even got to use our old Mete-R-Matic topdresser, a 1983 model that still works really well. Now that we have a new Progator to run the the Tycrop topdresser, the old unit can pull the Mete-R-Matic at any speed and achieve an even amount across the surface. Having two topdressers throwing down sand saved us over 3 hours of this process, which means I wasn't here until dark.
My Western Garden Book has been getting a workout over the last few years as we continue to improve some of our landscape areas. Our region can support the growth of a diverse set of plant life and the possibilities are endless.

Our recent renovation of the entry to the tee box on #4 included an arid landscape and some decomposed granite used as mulch. The plantings in this area included some muhly grass, leatherleaf sedge, 'little john' bottle brush, and 'Karl Foerster' feather reed grass. The desert look has been well received by the membership and I hope to incorporate this design to a few new areas. Plants like these are very maintenance friendly and labor is reduced because of less grass and weed eating locations.

Another recent landscape improvement surrounds the restrooms near #7 tee (pictured below left). Here we used some 'rose glow' barberry bushes, two brush cherries, divided our agapanthas, and eventually will add some star jasmine on a trellis built by Craig.

Finally, in this landscape roundup, here is (below right) a photo of some plants we added to the parking lot islands last year. The euphorbia 'ascot rainbow' has done very well and the salvia 'may night' rebounded from winter dormancy with no problem. The humming birds have been loving this combination and so have I.
This year, the Annual GrassRoots Tournament for the Sierra Nevada Golf Course Superintendent Association was held at William Land Park Golf Course in Sacramento, CA. Host Superintendent, Bob Cline and his staff had the course in great condition after some serious rain and set up a wonderful day.

I was able to take three staff members, our Assistant Superintendent, Craig Heitman, our Equipment Manager, Jan Cariati, and our Course Setter, Bert Ryan.
The cost was kept down with the golf being free from the course and lunch provided by Ewing Irrigation, and it was good. Proceeds were donated back to the 1st Tee of Sacramento which calls William Land Park its home. After the round, we were entertained and educated by Pat Finlen, CGCS from the Olympic Club, host of the 2012 US Open, giving all these staff members an inside look at a top tier facility and major tournament preparations.

Thanks to the crew who stayed behind and completed some tree work, projects, and mowing in our absence. Our staff is very independent and responsible and I get to return to the course to marvel at how well they did without anyone pointing fingers or barking orders. Of course, the only one who barks orders around here is our dog, Izzo and I'm pretty sure she slept all day.
This was Jan's first GIS and she definitely made the most of it meeting with many equipment suppliers, researching new products, obtaining price information for upcoming projects, and joining the International Golf Course Equipment Managers Association. She also picked up bags full of souvenirs for the staff back at the course.

We do this every year. We take our fair share of the floor swag, hats, pens, bags, water bottles, and all kinds of trinkets to share with the staff. Upon our return, the lunch table looks like a disorganized garage sale. We pull the time cards and shuffle through to raffle off our plunder.
They were a little happier about it than the picture shows, they just don't like their picture taken. The John Deere hats are always the first to go. She will tell you that sand and mowers do not mix. However, being the patient and hardworking person she is, the necessary topdressing we preform is taken in stride. We discuss the timing, monitor results, and she spends a day getting the mowers in perfect condition when the sand takes the edge away front the cutting units.

Some sand-to-mower contact cannot be avoided. In the pictures below, this sanding is not necessary and can be avoided. The photo on the left includes a divot that someone filled with half a bottle of sand. That pillar of sand is going to end up in mowing reels of our fairway unit. If you just give the sand a little kick with your foot to disperse the portion that is above the turf canopy, then you will save our machines some steel and you'll be doing Jan a favor. The pic on the right has two properly filled divots.
Filling a bunch of divots that have been neglected is a great way to serve your club, but do not associate how many bottles you used with the level of your service. Dumping piles of sand out there causes problems with the mowers, creates uneven turf and scalped areas, and it costs the club money for more sand, labor to refill the bottles, and Jan's hard work getting the reels in shape after too many of these encounters. Fill your divots, but fill them correctly.Robert Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04421079715685197799noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2972247706794253096.post-23438969819333772232012-02-13T07:34:00.000-08:002012-02-13T07:34:12.978-08:00Another stair project, why not?We started this project on December 12th and it's still going. We expected to finish within a month, but the loss of our tractor has certainly slowed progress as we load material by hand. I'm not too surprised that no complaints have come my way from all tees being put on the forward pad during construction. It takes courage to pull out the driver (and maybe some foolishness) on our #1 handicap hole from this shortened distance. I've been going with a hybrid and then I do my best to find a way to destroy my chances with my approach shot. That's kinda my game.

Anyhow, we have once again elected to remove some dangerous railroad tie stairs, but this time, we are going another route. The new entry way will feature a series of wide landings built with decomposed granite and a 4 x 6 frame. The retaining wall is built with recycled Basalite bricks pulled from the tree wells on #12; more on that later.

This is still a few days away from completion as we are determined to maintain the course conditions first and foremost and turn to our projects when time allows. Here are some pics to give you an idea of what we are doing.
I first started thinking about this while stimping the greens and I was bothered when the balls did not end up in the same place. If multiple balls are rolled in the exact same direction, each ball should go to the exact same place. Simple enough, right? That would be the definition of a 'true' green.

When you hit your line with the correct speed, you did your part and the green should do it's part by keeping the ball on path. Too much thatch or puffiness or too many ball marks, old cups, and blemishes and the ball will get off line and a good putt is not rewarded with that wonderful sound at the bottom of the cup. I love that sound.

It didn't take long to discover that the stimp meter wasn't the best apparatus to check the line of a putt. Ours is a little old, and I think it's been dropped or thrown a few times. The roll out is typically the same, but direction can vary by a few inches per ball. We switched to a 2 inch PVC pipe that acts as our stimp meter's case. This worked much better.

If we see too much bobble, wiggle, or misdirection caused by the surface of the green, then we know that a light topdress, grooming, or verticut needs to be put on the schedule. The first video is of #14 green with a 15 foot putt. Assistant Superintendent, Craig Heitman is dropping the balls down the chute with some sure hands. I like how the last ball finishes with the logo up. The second was much more difficult with less than perfect results, a 26 foot putt with a 5 foot break near the front of #15 green. 3 of these lipped out and 6 went in the hole. We will probably be doing this again just for the fun of it, all in the name of science.
Since July 1st (the start of the precipitation calendar) we've received 1.63 inches of rain. This time of year, I'd normally be complaining about the persistent fog and cold, wet conditions. Instead, we've been blessed with the best golfing weather the Central Valley could possibly hope for with clear sunny skies and temperatures near 60 degrees, day after day.

Today's frost delay had the course on hold until nearly 11:00. Later in the afternoon we had two guys hand watering because the turf is so thirsty. Rain is coming on Thursday and the frost and irrigation will get a break and the mountains will get some much needed snow. Cross your fingers, ready the windshield wipers, and dig out your umbrella. We need some rain!!!
To start off a new year, it's always nice to look in the rear view mirror and take note of what went right and what did not. One item we can be particularly proud of is our reduced use of fungicide.

We are always striving to make the grass stronger to resist disease, handle dry conditions, and withstand low mowing heights and aggressive maintenance practices. The membership has been supportive allowing timely aerification, light topdressing, and greens flushing when necessary. The result is stronger turf that does not need as many 'plant protectants' as it used to.

On December 20th, the greens received the 7th fungicide application of 2011 after waiting to see the smallest sign of snow mold. The whole staff is trained to watch for any disease spots and having 12 sets of eyes out there sure beats one or two. Occasionally, a ball mark or a scalped plug is mistaken for disease, but rather safe than sorry.

In spring of 2011, we applied two shots of fungicide designed as a preventative for fairy ring. In late spring, waitea patch or brown ring patch popped up just before the Men's Invitational and required our third application. At the beginning of July, we put down Insignia as we have done for the past three years. Finally, at the tail end of summer, we needed two applications to rid the greens of some minor fairy ring problems.

7 applications is a big improvement from bi-weekly apps on a preventative basis. However, that is needed in many instances where disease pressure is high. Courses in the Midwest, Southeast, and pretty much any where east of the Mississippi will experience humidity levels that dictate a solid preventative fungicide plan. Waiting until you see disease is waiting too long. Stockton is blessed with a climate that allows a different strategy and employing it can make the turf stronger.

So far, ten 10 days in, we've applied zero fungicides in 2012.

Happy New Year to all the golfers out there!! Thanks for giving me and my crew our jobs, we love them. This sport needs a good year for the 2 million people it employs (directly and indirectly) and the $3.5 billion raised for charity (2005). Do your part to make 2012 the turnaround year.
In the past six years, I'm been lucky enough (and supported by SGCC's membership) to attend the Golf Industry Show at locations around the country. I've played some phenomenal golf courses, I traveled to Ireland, I've gone to Farmlinks, and most recently to Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the Syngenta Business Institute. Yes, I'm a little spoiled.

The Syngenta Business Institute is held at the Gralyn International Conference Center in Winston-Salem, NC. The facility is amazing in its history, architecture, sheer size, and the staff treated us like family. As you could imagine, they also fed us pretty well.

This last trip was unlike any previous event I've been able to attend. Most other educational offerings center around agronomy, chemicals, cultural practices, and basically growing turf. The problem with this, is 80% of this job is dealing with people. Growing turf is the easy part. Working with a crew, club managers, a membership, the public, sales associates, the media, and regulation entities is the part of my job that keeps reminding me that I have a lot to learn.
Three professors from Wake Forest University Schools of Business and another from The Ohio State University taught an energetic group of 26 superintendents principles of financial mangement, leadership, motivation, negotiation, and closing the generational gap. There was so much information, and homework before and after the event, that I haven't even finished going through the material. I have so much to share with the other managers at the club and if it ever rains, I will put together a summary for our leaders at SGCC.

If you are a superintendent, then you owe it to yourself and your course to apply for this event for all the positives that come with it. Besides all the education, I had the opportunity to learn from 25 other superintendents. Before, between, and after classes, I picked up many ideas from experienced and knowledgable peers. As usual, the networking is the most beneficial portion of the trip.

Thank you to Syngenta for hosting this phenomenal program. Stockton GCC, our staff, and I will benefit from this education immediately.
